There were no goals at The city Stadium as Airdrie and Queen’s Park drew for the second time this season.

Diamonds boss Danny Lennon made two changes, with Lewis McGrattan ruled out through injury and Liam McStravick dropping to the bench after his midweek international exploits. Cammy Cooper and Jake Hastie were their replacements, both of them making their first starts of the season.

Former Airdrie captain Sean Crighton named a depleted Spiders line-up with injury ruling out top scorer Josh Fowler and several others.

The first incident of an end-to-end 90 minutes saw Cooper booked for leading with the Armstrong in a third-minute challenge with Rocco Friel, but the Diamonds forward was involved in a more positive sense two minutes later, linking well with Euan Henderson as an early attack resulted in a corner kick.

The resultant setpiece sat up nicely for Cole McKinnon, who sent in a powerful volley which was blocked yards from goal.

Henderson and Cooper combined again on seven minutes, this time releasing Hastie who sent his angled strike over the bar.

Some nice touches from Henderson were feeding his team-mates, with McKinnon almost taking advantage on 11 minutes but having to settle for another corner.

The home side hit back on 14 minutes, attacking in numbers and forcing a good clearance from Craig Ross to avert the danger. Grant Savoury fired over from a free-kick two minutes later.

The home defence repelled attacks led by Cooper and Charlie Telfer, with the latter seeing a decent Henderson effort blocked.

Matty Connelly was the first goalkeeper called into action, but Henry Fieldson’s 19th-minute strike was an easy take for the Motherwell loanee.

Hastie tried his luck again from a similar position to his earlier chance, again clearing the bar but only by a matter of inches on this occasion.

Calum Ferrie got down to a 21st-minute Henderson effort which lacked real power, and Seb Drozd saw a similar strike cleared at the other end two minutes later.

Fieldson’s 24th-minute cross looked as if it might be sneaking in after a driving run, but it dropped wide of the far post.

Two minutes later a fine challenge from Jamie Barjonas prevented a certain goal as Queen’s worked a clever cutback to the edge of the box.

Carlo Pignatiello should have done better after being released by Aidan Connolly’s interception on the half-hour mark, the former Dumbarton man missing the target after bearing down on goal.

Connolly was impressing at both ends, blocking Cooper’s route to goal on 32 minutes before being denied by some stout defending from Lewis Strapp at the other end.

Airdrie came closest eight minutes before the break, McKinnon sending in another fizzing effort which took strong hands from Ferrie to palm over the bar. Aidan Wilson headed wide from the resultant corner.

The Diamonds started the second half brightly after making a double change at the break, Dylan MacDonald and Chris Mochrie returning from injury to replace Ross and Cooper.

Hastie won a 49th-minute corner after a strong run down the right, with Telfer then seeing a free-kick headed clear before McKinnon had another effort blocked.

Chances for Mochrie and Henderson were passed up before the home side enjoyed a spell of pressure, Drozd eventually booked for a lunge after failing to make the most of a chance in the 57th minute.

Henderson fired over before Ferrie fielded a McKinnon header, with a quick break seeing home sub Tyrece McDonnell denied by Connelly at his near post.

Mochrie had another shot blocked before a sustained Airdrie attack eventually came to nothing, Queen’s Park getting men behind the ball and keeping the Diamonds at bay.

Mochrie was unlucky to see his 78th-minute cross deflected back to Ferrie after a powerful run, and five minutes later Airdrie did manage to get the ball in the net, substitute Aaron Reid applying a fine finish to Strapp’s cross, but the frontman was rightly flagged offside.

Connelly was alert to beat McDonnell to a through-ball in stoppage time, and the match ended goalless.

Although the Diamonds will feel they should have got more after an improved second half performance, a point and a clean sheet away from home is never easy to achieve in the Championship.

Dunfermline Athletic are next up for Airdrie as Neil Lennon’s side visit the Albert Bartlett for a rearranged fixture on Tuesday evening.
