Second placed Alloa Athletic beat Airdrieonians to leave the Diamonds as one of four teams tied on 46 points.

With the Wasps already having ensured their own involvement in the play-off matches, Airdrie, East Fife, Brechin City and Queen's Park are deadlocked in the chase for the two remaining spots.

Diamonds boss Mark Wilson went with the same eleven that started the previous two matches, while no fewer than six of the Alloa squad had previously featured for Airdrie.

With three minutes gone keeper Rohan Ferguson pushed a long range effort from Jordan Kirkpatrick over the crossbar.

Airdrie went close to breaking the deadlock on seven minutes when the defenders joined the attack and a corner from the right saw Simon Mensing’s head flick knocked on by Joe Gorman only to be denied by the crossbar.

Andy Ryan tried a speculative overhead kick in 23 minutes when a Ryan Conroy free kick fell to him after deflecting off the wall.

Three minutes later Conroy picked out Ryan and the striker’s shot was well taken by Neil Parry.

In 42 minutes a long angled ball into the box found Greig Spence and his volley was easily taken by Ferguson.

Two minutes after the restart a Conroy cross from the left picked out Jack Leitch and Parry pushed his headed attempt over the bar.

After 54 minutes Ferguson made a fine reaction save pushing away a Dylan Mackin shot after the on-loan Motherwell striker had been set up by Spence.

With 58 minutes gone shouts for a penalty were waved aside after Ryan went down inside the box.

Alloa took the lead on 66 minutes after Ferguson came out for a ball beyond his defenders and cleared it upfield but it fell to Kirkpatrick who controlled well and sent the ball back into the net.

As Airdrie pushed for an equaliser in 74 minutes a Gorman header was pushed away for a corner by Parry.

The former Diamond keeper pulled off a great save from substitute Adam Brown in 83 minutes after fine build up play.

Alloa were denied a second goal three minutes from time after Ferguson made another fine save from Kirkpatrick.

Goal difference now separates the sides from third to sixth in the table.

Airdrie's destiny is still in their own hands as their remaining fixtures see them face two of those teams, East Fife and Queen's Park.
