Iain Russell's opener wasn't enough for Airdrie as Peterhead turned things round at New Broomfield.

Two weeks after beating league leaders Alloa Athletic on their own patch, Airdrieonians were beaten by the team sitting at the bottom of the table, after turning in a poor performance.

Despite taking the lead against the run of play, two goals in as many minutes turned the match in favour of Peterhead.

There were three former Diamonds - McCluskey, Stevenson and Blockley - in the Peterhead squad as the visitors looked to climb off the foot of the table.

It was Jim McInally’s side that enjoyed the best of the first half from an attacking perspective.

Fiacre Kelleher had the ball in the net when he rose to head past Rohan Ferguson after seven minutes but referee Alan Muir had blown his whistle as the big centre back appeared to have leaned on his opponent to rise above him.

Kevin Dzierzawski fired the ball at the middle of the goal in 12 minutes and Ferguson gathered the ball cleanly, while the keeper also gathered another long range effort, this time from Stefan McCluskey midway through the first half.

Rory McAllister had a great chance to break the deadlock in 39 minutes but his powerful drive on the edge of the box from a free kick was wide of the goal.

Ten minutes after the restart the Diamonds opened the scoring and it was Iain Russell who broke the deadlock. A good piece of play by Andy Ryan led to him picking a perfect pass to Russell to his left and his shot from inside the box took a deflection on the way into the net.

The home defence then seemed to lose their concentration for a couple of minutes and were clinically punished by Peterhead. A corner in 66 minutes by Dzierkawski picked out Kelleher at the near post and his flick sent the ball into the net. A minute later a long through ball left McAllister in the clear and he had time to side foot the ball past Ferguson.

Airdrie countered when Ryan rose high in 72 minutes to power a Kevin Schmidt cross against the crossbar.

A superb point blank save from Ferguson in 79 minutes from substitute Brown kept the scoreline in check but in stoppage time a rushed pass from Joe Gorman fell to McAllister who picked out substitute Leighton McIntosh to send a third goal past Ferguson and end a miserable late Saturday evening for the Diamonds supporters.
