GOALS from Jamie Redman and Paul Watson won the Scottish Week Challenge Cup for Peterhead.

Airdrie conceded twice in as many minutes at Balmoor Stadium on Saturday with the home side doing enough for victory.

The Diamonds netted through John Boyle, who had earlier struck the woodwork, but couldn't overhaul a 2-0 deficit in the north-east.

Boss Jimmy Boyle fielded keeper Adam Szpilczynski, released by Airdrie two months ago, as a trialist following Hearts keeper Mark Ridgers' decision to go to East Fife on loan.

And the goalie excelled early-on with a fine save to deny Blue Toon marksman Rory McAllister.

At the other end, summer signing Boyle was unlucky to see some determined play end when his rasping drive cannoned off the bar.

Szpilczynski was beaten for the first time in the 35th minute when he failed to reach Bryan Deasley's corner with Redman nodding in.

And the Airdrie custodian could do little soon after when Watson curled a free-kick from just outside the box into the top corner of the net.

The New Broomfield men pulled a goal back two minutes before the break when Boyle stroked home from a yard out following Peterhead's inability to deal with Fraser Keast's cross.

In the second half, Peterhead could have extended their advantage but Martin Bavidge's low effort hit the post.
