AIRDRIE continued their build-up to the big kick-off with a draw at Recreation Park on Tuesday night.

Ryan Donnelly struck for the Diamonds but a smashing strike from Alloa trialist Stirling Smith levelled the match.

Boss Jimmy Boyle said: "It was a good workout. Alloa are a good team and they pass the ball about really well. We knew they'd give us a tough game.

"We had a tough night training on Monday and I'm pleased we followed that up with a hard-working shift here."

The Diamonds were the better side in the opening 45 minutes with efforts from Derek Holmes and Ryan Donnelly blocked by Wasps goalie Scott Bain.

The home side rallied before the break. Ex-Diamond loanee Ryan McCord's shot was gathered by keeper Mark Ridgers who then denied Alloa trialist Stevie Masterton.

Ridgers was between the sticks for the Diamonds with a view to returning to New Broomfield for a second loan spell having been with the club last term.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 62nd minute. A poor, short backpass from Masterton was pounced on by Donnelly who rounded the keeper and slotted home.

But the Wasps equalised nine minutes later. Smith was given too much time and space and he popped a delightful left-foot shot into the corner of the net.

Donnelly had several chances to win it for Airdrie who finished strongly. Chris Malone also came close when he drove a shot just over the bar.

The only disappointment for Boyle were injuries picked up by the midfield duo of Sean Lynch and Graeme Owens. They will be assessed over the coming days.

Airdrie's final pre-season friendly is at Peterhead on Saturday.
