It was another high-scoring thriller for Airdrie’s under 17s side on Sunday morning as the Diamonds fought back from two down to rescue a point against the Rosey Posey thanks to another Guy Bainbridge hat-trick.
Scott Craig was without several key players – defender Sean Dempsey is missing with a calf injury; goalkeeper Joshua Hargreaves is back on the treatment table after dislocating his shoulder and forward Aaron Weir continues to miss out due to ongoing health problems.
The visitors started the game brightly with two chances in as many minutes, Cooper Reed on hand to sweep up the initial cross before the Rose broke again and squandered a golden opportunity from just yards out after catching the Diamonds with a swift counterattack.
The away side made their strong start count 13 minutes in, taking the lead with a simple finish from inside the six-yard-box after the ball was played across the box, the Diamonds defence failing to cut out the delivery.
Airdrie didn’t take long to respond – just a minute later, Stephen McKay latched onto a pass from Donnachie and fired into the bottom corner from 20 yards for a quick equaliser.
Marcus Wallace was caught out with a long ball a few minutes later, but again Cooper Reed was on hand to cover for his defensive partner.
Airdrie’s skipper Guy Bainbridge thought he was through on goal 20 minutes in, but the offside flag stopped him from unleashing a strike at goal.
Bainbridge had another opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the 25th minute, after great interplay between Sam Gallagher and goal-scorer McKay saw the forward get in behind the Bonnyrigg back-line, however the goalkeeper was equal to his effort from a tight angle.
Kaleb Donnachie’s eyes lit up two minutes after that, as the Diamonds started to put some pressure on the away defence – but a good late challenge blocked his shot as it hurtled towards the goal.
The Diamonds went ahead thanks to the previous game’s hat-trick hero Guy Bainbridge, after the striker battled with a defender and won the ball, before lofting over the goalkeeper into the back of the net on 34 minutes.
Donnachie missed a half-chance 40 minutes in to double the Diamonds’ lead, when his shot went the wrong side of the woodwork at the near post.
The visitors would be the next team to find the net after Airdrie lost possession in the midfield, prompting a clinical Rose attack which was finished off well leaving Lindsay with no chance.
The best passage of play until that point from Airdrie came on the stroke of half time, a one-touch passing move saw the ball worked out to the right-hand side where Connor Hay found himself in space, but the wing-back struck wide of the target.
The Diamonds started the second half well, Bainbridge crowded out I the end after latching onto a cross from Gallagher on 48 minutes.
In the 54th minute, playmaker Stephen McKay thought he had sent Donnachie through on goal, but the Bonnyrigg defence got back quickly to stifle the forward before he could have an effort at goal.
Up the other end Liam Lindsay made a great reflex save just a minute after Donnachie’s chance, stopping the visitors from going in front once again.
Lindsay couldn’t react as quickly in the following seconds though, as the away side did find the net with another tidy finish.
Stephen McKay’s pinpoint cross looked like it would bring a certain goal just before the hour mark, but the ball remarkably struck the post and flew into the goalkeeper’s gloves after striking a defender in the box.
In the 61st minute, the visitors put daylight between the teams. A corner broke kindly to the edge of the box where a yellow shirt was on hand, the Rose player firing past Lindsay who could only get enough to push the ball into the side netting of his goal on the line.
The first Airdrie changes came instantly – Suny and Taouss replacing McCafferty and MacMillan who hadn’t been as effective as they were in the previous match.
The Diamonds won a spot kick on 63 minutes after quick feet from Connor Hay drew a kick from a Rose defender, prompting the Diamonds wing-back to go down in the box.
Guy Bainbridge stepped up and slotted the penalty away, reducing the deficit to one goal with just under half an hour to play.
Airdrie wanted another penalty just minutes later, but the referee waved away the claims as the ball appeared to strike the arm of a defender, albeit from close range inside the penalty area.
On 67 minutes, Scott Craig looked to his bench once again – Darryl McMutrie and Cole Lyon coming off the bench again with Donnachie and Reed being replaced as Airdrie looked to fight for an equaliser.
Daniel Suny looked likely to score a couple of times with 20 minutes to go, initially seeing his volley take a deflection before the goalkeeper gathered, and then being stifled by a fantastic sliding challenge before he could get another shot away as he stormed into the box.
Play was paused in the 73rd minute to allow an injured opposition player to receive treatment after he went down in some pain off the ball.
Airdrie would get the opportunity to score again on 78 minutes, when Daniel Suny was caught by the studs of a defender in the box – the referee again pointed to the spot.
Remarkably, Guy Bainbridge slotted home from 12 yards for the fourth time in two games – also grabbing a second consecutive hat-trick as the Diamonds drew level with more than ten minutes to play.
Darryl McMutrie had a chance to get a shot away after being played through by Sam Gallagher, but the forward lost possession untidily in the box.
The Diamonds executed a training ground free kick routine in the 81st minute which saw Connor Hay sneak round the back and have a shot at goal which was saved in the end.
Airdrie kept probing at the Rose defence, McMutrie trying to thread through to Suny – but the substitute put too much on his pass which was gathered by the goalkeeper with five minutes to go.
McMutrie was involved again, this time meeting a McKay cross in the air, but the forward headed wide of the target with the clock ticking down quickly.
The final chance of the game fell at the feet of Suny, but agonisingly the Diamonds substitute scooped a shot well over the bar as a gap opened in the opposition defence.
The full-time whistle blew after five minutes of stoppage time, as the Diamonds were left with another point at home.
Scott Craig will only have time for one training session before the next match, which promises to be a challenging encounter with Dundee on Friday 5th September.
