East Kilbride vs Airdrieonians

A win over East Kilbride will break Airdrie’s club record for consecutive wins – and midfielder Gavin Gallagher says the Diamonds are desperate to do it.

Saturday’s 1-0 victory against Montrose saw six-in-a-row achieved for the third time since the club’s reformation in 2002, with the record being set in 2012 and matched in 2019.

The result came courtesy of Lewis Gibson’s second-half penalty, and though the narrow manner of the win made it a nervy affair at times, midfielder Gallagher says Airdrie’s determination saw them through.

“It was a pretty cagey game. Obviously coming into the game we were on a good run, so were they in the league.

“With us playing at home, we wanted the three points, and we got that.”

The match kicked off October’s fixtures after Gallagher had enjoyed an excellent September, putting in some impressive performances to go with his three goals – two against Bonnyrigg Rose and one against Berwick Rangers.

The 22-year-old is adamant he should have two doubles to his name after getting the final touch on a goal credited to Cole McKinnon.

“It was actually four, but I’m not going to take it off Cole! If it gets changed it gets changed.

“I just wanted to get that monkey off my back and get that first goal, and I’ve managed to get three. We’ll call it three.”

Attention now turns to Saturday’s visit to East Kilbride’s Bumblebee Stadium – the club’s first on competitive duty.

While Gallagher recognises that a seventh straight win would be an outstanding achievement for the Diamonds, he says it won’t add pressure on Saturday.

“Not so much pressure I would say, probably a wee bit of bite to it.

“We’ve spoken about it in the changing room – we want to get that seventh win and hopefully be part of history.”

And having featured in all three of Airdrie’s previous competitive matches against Kilby, Gavin knows exactly what to expect from Mick Kennedy’s side.

“They’re good on the ball, a possession-based team – they’ll probably have the ball for long periods of time. It’s just about us being patient.

“Once we get to go and press we need to be really aggressive and then hopefully take goals.”

The sides drew 1-1 at the Albert Bartlett in August, Liam McLeish’s penalty cancelling out a Sean Fagan opener – and head coach John Rankin expects a similarly tight match.

“They’re good on the ball, a big threat. Good players, lots of experience throughout their team married with some young boys coming in.

“There’s lots of goals in their team and they play an attractive style of football. I always knew that would be the case with them, they’ve not got away from any of that throughout the leagues they’ve played in.

“We’re going to need to be at our best to get anything from the game on Saturday. It was a good game here the last time, and I think this game will be not too much different. We’re looking forward to it, but again we’ll need to be at our best and fully motivated.”

Evan Easton is back in contention for the Diamonds after shaking off a hamstring strain. Zac Butterworth and Liam McLeish continue to miss out after suffering slight setbacks in their recoveries.

Skipper Cole McKinnon is awaiting scan results on the back injury which ruled him out of last weekend’s match, but Ruairidh Adams and Callum Burnside will be available again following international duty.

Referee Mark Daly – a late replacement for Lloyd Wilson – officiated Airdrie's recent 2-1 win at Peterhead.

Match tickets are now sold out. Unfortunately our DTVLive streaming service is unavailable for this fixture, but as always we’ll bring you match highlights as soon as possible.
