Airdrieonians vs Berwick Rangers

Divine Iserhienrhien got his first Airdrie goals in Tuesday’s win over Bonnyrigg Rose, and the striker now has Berwick Rangers in his sights as the Diamonds look to continue their winning run.

A double from the 18-year-old set the scene for a rout as Airdrie blasted six past the Lowland League side, with Gavin Gallagher (2), an own goal, and trialist Tom Pickford adding to the scoreline.

Iserhienrhien almost didn’t make the match at all as an amusing error had him plotting a course for the home of another team in red and white hoops…

“Basically I just put in the sat-nav New Douglas Park instead of New Dundas Park.

“I was halfway to Hamilton and then I realised and had to text the gaffer and tell him I was going to be late!”

Luckily the big striker noticed his mistake in time to hotfoot it to Midlothian, where he was delighted to open his Airdrie account.

“It was good, it was a long time coming. It was a big goal of mine to finally get the first goal for the club – thankfully I got the first and the second.

“I couldn’t quite get the third. I watched it back and I definitely thought I could have just claimed it and got the goal and my first career hat-trick. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to do that again.”

The victory made it four wins on the trot for the Diamonds ahead of Saturday’s meeting with another Lowland League East side, Berwick Rangers.

The Borderers have already claimed an SPFL scalp in the competition this week, beating Stranraer 3-2 on Tuesday evening despite parting company with manager Kevin Haynes last weekend.

Iserhienrhien thinks the Northumberland side could makes things difficult as they travel to Airdrie for the first time in 18 years.

“We’re expecting a tough game from Berwick, with them beating Stranraer who are doing well in League 2.

“We’ll just prepare the same as we do for any other game.”

Although cup-tied to Airdrie for this competition, Iserhienrhien is hoping to gain some more first-team minutes with Annan Athletic, having joined the Galabankies on a co-operation loan deal alongside Cole Williams.

Free to move between teams at his parent club’s discretion, Divine is happy to be available wherever he is needed, having enjoyed a similar arrangement last season.

“Hopefully I can go down there and show what I can do with Annan as well. I had a good loan spell with Edinburgh City, hopefully I can do more of the same.

“The loan move to Edinburgh was really good for me, I learned a lot under Michael McIndoe.”

Diamonds head coach John Rankin expects another professional performance from his side as they aim for a fifth straight win in all competitions.

“I think fundamentally we go into the Berwick game on Saturday needing to do the things that we’ve been doing well recently – first and foremost that’s working hard, being hard to beat and being aggressive in duels and challenges.

“There’s an expectancy because we’re playing Berwick who are two leagues below us, but again it all comes down to attitude and application, and making sure that we go about our business in the right way.”

With strikers Dapo Mebude and Matty Yates missing Tuesday’s match through injury and illness respectively, the picture looked brighter towards the end of the week with both players returning to training alongside fellow forwards Robbie Mahon and Liam McLeish.

Midfielder Zac Butterworth remains sidelined, while Callum Burnside and Josh Gentles are unavailable and Ruairidh Adams is away on international duty.

Ross Donaldson referees the penultimate KDM group phase tie.
