Airdrieonians vs Ayr United
Results elsewhere could have a bearing as Airdrie take on Ayr United this weekend, but Scott Constable insists the Diamonds must concentrate on the task in hand.
The Honest Men visit the Albert Bartlett Stadium for the penultimate game of the regular league season, and it’s all to play for as Airdrie battle with Ross County and Greenock Morton for Championship survival.
With the 10th-placed Staggies and eighth-placed Morton locking horns at The Global Energy Stadium, Saturday’s results could throw up a number of final-day permutations.
Airdrie’s meeting with Ayr is the last of a run of three consecutive home matches for the Diamonds, who will aim to continue their unbeaten record after 2-2 draws with Dunfermline Athletic and Partick Thistle.
Substitute Lewis McGrattan rescued a point last weekend after second-placed Thistle had turned the match on its head following Chris Mochrie’s first-half opener.
With Dylan MacDonald and Adam Devine sidelined by injury, Constable started the match in the right-back position, and says the Diamonds’ equaliser could prove to be an important moment.
“It brings us a lot of momentum. If it was a loss it’s even more pressure on us, because we’d be level on points with Ross County.
“That's a big point that we've got, now we need to go into the weekend and just do our jobs.
“We’ve just got to focus on ourselves, get the three points, and see what the outcome of the Ross County game is.”
The 18-year-old Dundonian can also operate in central midfield, but has provided full-back cover on several occasions, and acquitted himself well against an established Championship winger in Partick’s Aidan Fitzpatrick.
“Every opponent’s hard that I’ve played against. They’re all experienced, but I’ve just got to take their experience and put it in my game.
“It was a challenge against Aidan, he was good – fast, but I think I coped with him well.”
With two games remaining and Airdrie in ninth position, attention turns to the visit of Ayr United, now under the leadership of former Hamilton boss John Rankin following the departure of Scott Brown last month.
The Diamonds ended a long streak of Ayr wins in the fixture with a 1-1 draw at Somerset Park in January, Cole McKinnon netting the equaliser after Jamie Murphy had put the home side in front from the penalty spot.
With the west coast side’s Championship status already confirmed for next season, Constable is hopeful that Airdrie can get that elusive win over their opponents, who have only managed one win in their last 11 matches.
“They’ve been struggling recently, so we need to build up momentum – we have been in the last couple of games, we’ve just been unlucky with the draws.
“I think the changing room is in a good mood, so hopefully it comes to a good outcome.
“I think we’ve got that momentum now, and we’ll see what they’ve got. Our spirits are high, and we’re just taking everything we’ve learned from the last couple of games into Saturday.”
As the clock ticks down on Airdrie’s league season, Scott’s time at the club is also coming to a close after a season-long cooperation loan from Dundee United.
Although the first part of his season was hampered by injury, the Scotland youth international has relished his experiences with the Diamonds.
“I’ve enjoyed every part of it. I’ve come in full-time, and for a young 18-year-old it’s not that easy – but the lads are good to us, the manager and the staff are all good to me, and I’m just enjoying playing.
“That’s all you want for a young boy – getting minutes in men’s football, that’s all that matters, and I think it’s going in the right direction.”
Diamonds head coach Aaron Taylor-Sinclair expects a different challenge from Ayr under the guidance of their new interim manager.
“It’s obviously been mixed results for them, but John Rankin’s teams are full of energy and well organised, so it’s another tough test for us at home.
“It’s exciting, it’s going to be interesting seeing what happens in the other game, but for us it’s full focus on our game – we can only control that. We’re looking forward to it.”
The Airdrie boss hopes to welcome skipper Aidan Wilson back into the matchday squad, with fellow defender Dylan MacDonald also progressing toward a return.
Adam Devine, Dean McMaster, Alex King and Jake Hastie remain sidelined for the Diamonds.
Referee Lloyd Wilson has officiated three matches involving Airdrie this season – the opening day home draw with Ross County, September’s 2-1 defeat to St Johnstone, and the 3-0 win at Stark’s Park in November.
