Airdrieonians vs Partick Thistle
Chris Mochrie wants to atone for Tuesday night’s slip-up by grabbing three points from title-chasers Partick Thistle on Saturday.
Mochrie and Dom Thomas were the scorers as the Diamonds went two up on Dunfermline Athletic earlier this week, but Josh Cooper’s quick reply and Lucas Fyfe’s late equaliser saw the points shared.
The result saw Airdrie move three points clear of tenth-placed Ross County with a superior goal difference, but leaves the Diamonds relying on favours if they are to have any chance of avoiding the relegation play-off altogether.
Having faced league leaders St Johnstone last weekend, Airdrie now take on second-placed Partick Thistle.
The Jags have won both of the Firhill meetings by a single goal, but needed a stoppage-time equaliser to avoid defeat at the Albert Bartlett in November.
Mochrie knows that he and his team-mates face a difficult encounter with Mark Wilson’s side.
“It’ll be a really tough game, we’ve obviously played them a few times this season and we know what they’re good at.
“We’ve just got to dust ourselves off from Tuesday and try to go and get a positive result.”
Although the Diamonds would have been expected to secure the points against Dunfermline when Mochrie added his side’s second less than a minute after half-time, the forward believes a win against Thistle would make it a satisfactory total over the week.
“I think you probably would take the four points out of those two games, but it’s just about us going out on the pitch and executing.
“Tuesday felt like a loss, it was two points dropped, so we all want to get back out on the pitch as quickly as possible and try to put that right.”
And having also found the net in the 4-0 win over Ross County a fortnight ago, the former Dundee United man is hoping that he’s hitting the goal trail at the business end of the season.
“All I can do is just try to keep that going.
“I would have liked to score a lot more goals this year, but maybe it’s coming now at the right time. I’ll just try and continue to do that.”
Three games remain in a Championship campaign which has been frustrating so far – but the opportunity to avoid automatic relegation, and the outside chance of escaping the play-off, make Saturday’s fixture as important as they come.
Chris believes hard work is key to getting the necessary result.
“It’s huge. I think all we can really do is empty the tank – give everything in these last few games, get as many points as possible, and see where that leaves us come the end of the season.
“It’s just taking each game as it comes, giving everything, and seeing where that leaves us.
“We just want to get back out on that pitch and hopefully give a better performance. Hopefully that leads to a better result.”
Although the Diamonds are unbeaten in their last four at the Albert Bartlett, head coach Aaron Taylor-Sinclair acknowledges that home form has been poor overall this season – and wants that to change against Thistle.
“It’s going to be a tough task, they’re obviously flying high near the top of the table, so it’s another tough game for us – like all of them in the Championship.
“It’s about bouncing back. We know as a group and as staff that we’ve not been good enough at home this season, so we need to put that right and hopefully get the win.”
Dylan MacDonald, Aidan Wilson, Dean McMaster and Alex King continue to miss out, and this week saw squad options lessened further with Jake Hastie injured in training and Owen Stirton recalled by Dundee United.
Goalkeeping coach David Hutton will also watch the match from the stands after picking up a touchline suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Referee Calum Scott has been in charge of one other match featuring Airdrie this season – December’s 2-1 away win over Ross County.
