Airdrieonians vs Dunfermline Athletic

Airdrie have an early opportunity to put Saturday’s result behind them when they face Dunfermline Athletic in Tuesday’s rearranged fixture – and Charlie McArthur says it’s all to play for at the Albert Bartlett.

After a momentous 4-0 win in Dingwall a week ago, the Diamonds were brought back down to earth with a bang as St Johnstone inflicted the same result on them at the weekend.

It was a day to remember for the champions-elect, and one to forget for Airdrie – but the Diamonds can make immediate amends as Neil Lennon’s side come to town for a crucial midweek fixture.

A home win would see the lead over Ross County increase to five points, while moving Airdrie within three points of eighth-placed Morton – the Diamonds’ final-day opponents.

Speaking after the match at McDiarmid Park, defender McArthur was confident that he and his team-mates can deliver.

“We’re looking at this game as a must-win, especially with where we are in the league.

“You get three points, it puts massive pressure on the teams above, and we back ourselves to get out of this situation.”

20-year-old loanee McArthur made an eye-catching debut against the Pars in January, a match which saw the Diamonds leave East End Park with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Euan Henderson and Lewis McGrattan.

With Dunfermline missing key players through injury, and the possibility of others being rested ahead of next weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden, McArthur believes Airdrie can repeat the feat despite the Fife side’s otherwise impressive form.

“They’re a good team. We played them in my first game, and we won 2-0 away – so we’ve got every confidence that we can go and win this game as well.

“Especially at home with the fans behind us, I don’t see why we can’t take all three points.”

And with the Diamonds unbeaten in their last three home fixtures, the fact that the next three matches are all at the Albert Bartlett could prove vital.

“We have been good the last few games, and in the win against Ross County. That game was massive for us, and we’ve gone up there and managed to get ourselves ahead.

“It’s just about staying that way now – it’s about the game on Tuesday, getting three points again, and then we look ahead to Partick on Saturday.”

While results may have been a mixed bag since Charlie joined the club from Newcastle in January, the former Kilmarnock man firmly believes that there is more quality in the squad than the current league position would suggest.

“I think we’ve got so many good players in amongst the squad, you can see that. I don’t think we should be where we are, if I’m being honest.

“There’s certain reasons for that of course, but I don’t think we should be – we’ve got a squad full of really talented players, boys who just want to go and do well for this club.

“If the fans stay with us – and stay right to the end, because it’s going to be tight – then we back ourselves to get out of this.”

Head coach Aaron Taylor-Sinclair is also thankful for the quick turnaround, but warns that the Pars will be well up for the match.

“We can’t dwell, it’s full focus on Tuesday. I think they’ll maybe make some changes, but whatever formation, shape or players that they play, we need to be ready for it.

“They’ve shown over recent weeks that they’re probably one of the most in-form teams in Scotland right now, so regardless of what team they play it’s going to be a tough test for us.

“They’ll want to keep their play-off place cemented, so it’s just about us and how we approach the game. I said after Ross County that it’s about results and mentality, and that’s what it’s got to be for us.”

Referee Peter Stuart is back in charge of the fixture, having officiated the last meeting between the sides. The whistler has also overseen Airdrie’s goalless draws against Raith Rovers in January and Arbroath last month.
