Ross County vs Airdrieonians

Charlie Telfer says Airdrie’s recent upturn in form means there’s no reason the Diamonds can’t get a good result against his old side Ross County – and move off the foot of the table this weekend.

The Diamonds midfielder moved to The Global Energy Stadium last year after two successful seasons with Airdrie, returning to Lanarkshire in August having spent the second half of last season on loan at Hamilton Academical.

Although his season in the Premiership didn’t go as planned, Telfer enjoyed his brief spell in Dingwall.

“Albeit I didn’t play much when I was up there, I really enjoyed my time. It’s a great club with great people at it, so it’ll be good to go back up and hopefully we can get a good result.

“I don’t expect them to still be down there at the end of the season, but at the moment they are where they are. They’ve got a lot of quality and a lot of experience in their group but we’re in a good bit of form at the moment, so if we can do what we’ve been doing the way we’ve been playing, then I think we’ve got a chance.”

Airdrie may not have got the results they felt their performances deserved in recent league matches against Partick Thistle and Ayr United, but good wins over Arbroath and Raith Rovers have seen vital points picked up.

The Diamonds had a break from Championship duties last week with a potentially tricky Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton – but Charlie came off the bench to help his side brush past more of his former team-mates with ease.

“On Saturday I think, albeit maybe they had some chances in the first half, I felt we stayed composed and calm and then second half we blew them away.

“We’ve got real quality going forward and we kept the door shut at the back as well. It’s all good going forward, so fingers crossed we can do the same on Saturday.”

It’s a return to league action this weekend, and opponents Ross County find themselves in an unexpected position as we near the campaign’s halfway stage. The Staggies sit a point above Airdrie at the foot of the table – although they have a game in hand.

The pre-season title favourites have found life tough in the second tier, and disposed with manager Don Cowie after an inauspicious start to the campaign. New boss Tony Docherty is looking to steer the Highlanders up the table, but Telfer says the Diamonds are capable of another important victory.

“Every Saturday it’s 11 players against 11 players. Regardless of who they are and where they’ve been before, we need to go up and just show them how good we are.

“Saturday’s like any other team in the league, it’s going to be a difficult game and we’ll need to work hard before we can then go and play – which I think we’ve done quite well over the last wee period.”

Charlie had yet to make his return to the Albert Bartlett Stadium when the sides drew 2-2 on the opening day of the league season, with Akil Wright scoring twice to put the visitors ahead before Euan Henderson grabbed his own double to salvage an unlikely draw – but he knows that victory in Dingwall could kickstart a month of festive cheer for the Diamonds.

“We know we can beat anyone on our day, if we all work hard and play well collectively and individually.

“We’ve got a run of games now that maybe we think we can start getting points and start adding to our tally. We’ll just take it one game at a time, and hopefully we can get three points.”

Caretaker manager Aaron Taylor-Sinclair expects a difficult encounter up north, but says recent displays can inspire the Diamonds.

“We’ve been quite consistent with our performances, and if you keep that up then you’ll win more games than you won’t – we just need to keep that up going into the game on Saturday.

“We’re under no illusions it’ll be a tough game. There’s a lot of ex-SPL players in their ranks, so it’s going to be a tough game going up there.

“We need to take note of the last time we were away from home, against Raith Rovers – if we get a positive result like that we’ll be delighted with it.”

Lewis Strapp misses out after sustaining a shoulder knock against Hamilton, though the injury is not thought to be as bad as first feared and the defender could return in a matter of weeks.

Fellow left-back Cammy Bruce continued his return to top-team action with an appearance for the U19s in midweek, but will remain sidelined for Saturday’s fixture, alongside midfielders Alex King and Rhys Armstrong.
