Raith Rovers vs Airdrieonians

More of the same – that’s the message from Chris Mochrie as the Diamonds visit Raith looking to build on a strong display last weekend.

A Partick Thistle equaliser deep in stoppage time cruelly snatched a second consecutive home win from Airdrie’s grasp after the Diamonds had dominated their high-flying visitors in front of the TV cameras.

Mochrie was one of many star performers on the night, and says that the side’s overall performance allowed them to put the late disappointment behind them quickly.

“Emotions were quite high after that – we all thought we put in a good performance and probably deserved to win the game, so the way it happened was disappointing.

“The boys came in on Monday and everybody’s forgotten about it and we’re just looking forward to Saturday now.

“I thought the passing was good, the pressing was good, everybody was up for it. That’s what we need to bring every week. I’m sure if we do that we won’t be at the bottom of the league for much longer.”

The Diamonds now hit the road again, travelling to Stark’s Park to face a Raith Rovers side who this week parted company with manager Barry Robson after a below-par run of results.

With veteran defender Paul Hanlon in temporary charge, the match will see two caretaker managers go head-to-head as Aaron Taylor-Sinclair continues as Airdrie’s interim manager.

The sides played out a goalless draw at the Albert Bartlett in September with both sides coming close to nicking the points in stoppage time – former Diamond Dylan Easton curling just wide before Cole McKinnon’s deflected strike crashed off the underside of the bar.

Mochrie says that although the change in Kirkcaldy means the Diamonds don’t know what to expect in terms of how Raith will set up, he and his team-mates are concentrating on a repeat of the Partick performance.

“Because they’ve not got a manager we can’t prepare for them the way we normally would – it’s just about focusing on ourselves this week.

“We’re more than capable of putting in a good performance, and if we do what we did on Friday night, we should be able to get the win.

“We have played against them a lot. Even last season, it’s probably quite a similar squad, a lot of the same players. We know who their dangermen are, but like I said, I think it’s more about us this week. We’ll focus on ourselves and try to replicate that performance from Friday.”

Taylor-Sinclair has utilised Mochrie and Euan Henderson in a twin attack, and with both players having operated there earlier in their careers, the link-up is beginning to bear fruit.

Chris is happy for his partner to continue as top scorer – as long as the ball ends up in the net.

“He’s done really well this season to score as many goals as he has. It’s just about us trying to chip in now. Hopefully we can do that.

“That’s been a few weeks now we’ve been playing upfront together, so I think you can see it’s starting to come. We’re looking for each other and trying to create chances, which is good.

“I think another positive from Friday is that as a team we did have more chances – which is a very good sign, we just need to start putting them away.”

And caretaker manager Taylor-Sinclair repeats the message that his side will look to their own performance following the change in the opposition dug-out.

“Obviously it’s full focus on us and how we approach the game, we’ll be looking to impose our style on the game again regardless of who’s in charge.

“Raith have got a lot of threats from different areas from the park, but it’s more about us – from now on it’s about teams worrying about us rather than the other way around.”

The Diamonds boss still expects to be without Cammy Bruce, Dylan MacDonald, Rhys Armstrong, Alex King and Charlie Telfer. Although some of those out injured are very close to a return, it is likely that Saturday will come too sone.

Also missing are the suspended Lewis Strapp, and Liam McStravick, who is on international duty with Northern Ireland.

Lloyd Wilson has already refereed two Airdrie matches this season – the 2-2 home draw with Ross County which kicked off the campaign in August, and September 2-1 home defeat to St Johnstone in which both sides had a player red-carded at the final whistle.
