Montrose vs Airdrieonians

Euan Henderson wants three points against Montrose to set up a Premier Sports Cup decider against Alloa Athletic on Saturday.

The Diamonds travel to the Gable Endies’ temporary home at Gayfield with a 100% record in Group C following wins against Dundee and Bonnyrigg Rose.

The latter saw summer signing Henderson bag his first Airdrie goal after being brought down for a first-half penalty, and the pacy forward was pleased to get the win.

“It was a good result. In the first two games we’ve had two wins and two clean sheets – you can’t ask for much more.

“Going into half-time 3-0 up was good. Obviously they had ten men going into the second half and we maybe thought we’d get a few more goals, but it’s still a good win and a good start to the season.”

Having joined from Hamilton Academical in June, former Hearts youth Henderson has settled in quickly at the Albert Bartlett Stadium – and is quick to praise the Diamonds’ determination.

“It’s great. Before I signed, everything that I thought about the club and what I thought was going to happen, has happened.

“We always try to play to create chances, and as well – in the Dundee game – we got stuck in and defended our goal in the second half.”

Wednesday’s rearranged trip to Arbroath to take on Montrose gives Airdrie the chance to join Alloa Athletic on nine points ahead of the sides meeting on Saturday.

The Wasps also managed a win against Dundee at the weekend, and three points against Stewart Petrie’s side would spark a scenario where Saturday’s winner would top the group and go through as a seeded team – but Euan knows that Montrose will be no walkovers.

“It’ll be a tough one, probably a physical one. We both will do our thing and try to play the same way. I think the important thing is to do what we can control. If we win every game, we’ll get out of the group!

“I guess it’s a cliché, but we’ll take it one game at a time. Deal with the challenge that’s in front of us, win the game, and progress. You don’t want to be going into the last game of the group not wanting a team to score, or having to score this many goals to go through.

“I think just go up to win the game. Do what we’ve been doing – play, defend, and win the game. That’s the most important thing.”

Player-manager Rhys McCabe knows that any match on the Angus coast can descend into a war of attrition – but expects his side to approach the game with the right mindset.

“Conditions are a huge part any time you play at Gayfield, it doesn’t matter what time of the year. We’ve got to be prepared, first and foremost, to come up against a team and conditions that are probably going to be really difficult.

“We’ve got to make sure that we go in with the same attitude and application that we did to the first two games, go and try to build on some of the positive things that we’ve demonstrated, and hopefully get another positive result.”

The Diamonds boss still expects to be without Cammy Bruce (knee), Aidan Wilson (groin), Lewis Strapp (shoulder), Dean McMaster (calf) and Aaron Reid (hamstring), but is hopeful of seeing some of those missing back in the squad by the time the league campaign begins.

Referee Grant Irvine was in charge of three matches involving Airdrie last season, August’s 2-2 draw at Hamilton, the 1-0 home defeat to Ayr United in October, and the away leg of May’s play-off semi-final against Stenhousemuir, which the Diamonds won 3-1.
