Airdrieonians vs Stenhousemuir

Chris Mochrie says Airdrie have every right to be confident going into Saturday’s play-off second leg after an excellent performance on Tuesday night.

The Diamonds bring a 3-1 lead back to The Albert Bartlett Stadium after a dynamic display at Ochilview, and midfielder Mochrie grabbed his tenth goal of the season with Airdrie’s third on the night.

Having just lifted the club’s Goal of the Season award, the 22-year-old was delighted with another fine finish.

“It was a good team goal again, and I thought the boys played really well on Tuesday.

“We started well and they didn’t really come into the game after that. Obviously Gratts scores two amazing goals, so it was a good performance and we need to take that into Saturday.

“From the start of the second half of the season I’ve scored a few goals, and got a couple of runs of goals, so I’m happy to get another one and hopefully I’ll get a couple more!”

The former Dundee United man’s ability to find space in the box led to a host of chances falling his way in the first leg, and another attacking display is the expectation ahead of Saturday’s home tie.

“I think it’s just about not taking the foot off the gas. Starting the way we started on Tuesday and just trying to keep the pressure up and not really let them out or get a foothold in the game. We did that on Tuesday, so hopefully more of the same.

“We’ll go in with confidence – not arrogance, just belief in ourselves, and I’m sure we’ll do alright.”

Although the Diamonds enjoyed near-total dominance over the first match, a controversial late penalty award handed Stenhousemuir a way back in – and Chris knows that Gary Naysmith’s side are capable of making things difficult.

“They’re going to come into it with nothing to lose, really. They’ve had a successful season so if they can get anything out of this game I’m sure they’ll be delighted.

“It’s more about us and what we do, and I’m sure if we go about the game the right way and be ruthless, we’ll be alright.

“It won’t be an easy game, we know we’ll need to be on it to come away with a good result. It’s just about training properly and going in the same as Tuesday.”

Player-manager Rhys McCabe says complacency won’t be an issue as Airdrie look to tie up their passage to the final.

“We’ve got to treat it as a brand new game, as if it’s 0-0. We’ve got to approach the game with the same concept and the same models as we did in the tie on Tuesday. I thought the boys were excellent, and I think if we do that, it stands us in the best stead to go through.

“The message straight away after the game was that we don’t start enjoying ourselves too much and celebrating – we’re halfway there. We know that sometimes football, when there’s nothing to play for, throws up a few things that are unexpected.

“If we bring that intensity, regardless of what Stenhousemuir bring, we’ll be too much for them.”

The Diamonds boss is monitoring a few “bumps and bruises”, with Cammy Bruce and Aaron Reid remaining sidelined. Aidan Wilson (leg) and Mason Hancock (ankle) are continuing with their rehab but Saturday is likely to come too soon for the defensive pair.

Referee Matthew MacDermid has previously overseen two Airdrie matches this season, both home draws – December’s 2-2 tie with Morton and the 3-3 with Livingston in March.
