The Ian McMillan Stand
Last night’s Ian McMillan Memorial Dinner saw a number of moving tributes to the greatest Airdrieonian, and we were delighted to announce that the east stand at The Albert Bartlett Stadium is to be renamed The Ian McMillan Stand.
The evening was a poignant one, with Ian’s family in attendance as glowing tributes were paid by director Gordon Watson, guest speaker Archie Macpherson, and two former Diamonds who played under Ian’s management, John Lapsley and Willie McGuire.
Of course there were also plenty of laughs from the aforementioned characters, and from our after-dinner speaker Gordon Smith, who took the stage after guests had been treated to a delicious three-course meal from club partners Big Bite Catering.
Before the speeches and the meal, our End of Season Awards took place, and there were double wins for Gavin Gallagher (Young Player of the Year and Players Young Player of the Year) and Adam Frizzell (Ian McMillan Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year), alongside Chris Mochrie who took the Goal of the Season Award. Congratulations once again to all of our worthy winners!
The night was rounded off by an auction of sporting memorabilia, which raised a fantastic sum for Variety Scotland, a charity which was close to Ian’s heart.
Our thanks go to everyone involved in making the night such a success, and to the guests who attended.
We can’t wait to see the Ian McMillan Stand decorated (as shown in our mockup) with the great man’s name and two portraits representing his time as a Diamonds player and as manager. We’re sure you’ll agree it is a fitting tribute to the man who was indeed The Greatest Airdrieonian.
