Airdrieonians vs Livingston

Ben Wilson was Airdrie’s double hero against Greenock Morton on Saturday, and the Diamonds top scorer is now gunning for Livingston in Tuesday’s evening’s rearranged fixture.

Davie Martindale’s high-flying Lions visit the Albert Bartlett Stadium after the original tie was postponed following a heavy snowfall.

Striker Wilson, speaking after Saturday’s battling draw, believes it can be a springboard for the Diamonds ahead of Tuesday’s match.

“It’s a point in the right direction, and obviously it’s my first two league goals – so I’m happy on that front and I’m happy for the boys to break that rut. We’ll look to build on the point today for Tuesday.

“Character’s the most important thing, and we came back twice. We were a goal down and then 2-1 down at half-time, so I can’t complain. We’re giving everything out there, we create a lot of chances and we probably could win, but it’s a positive for us and everybody watching to see that we’re capable of it.

“I thought we were really solid without the ball, and when we had the ball we had that quality and pace at the top end of the pitch where we can hurt teams.”

Despite leading the club’s scoring charts since the beginning of the season following a blistering start to his Airdrie career, Saturday’s goals were Wilson’s first in the Championship.

Winning a penalty then netting from the spot after 35 minutes, the former Brighton and Cliftonville man slammed home his second with 11 minutes remaining. Delighted to rediscover his scoring touch, he described both goals and the effect they can have.

“It was a great pass from Grats, then it was just that wee change in tempo and I took a touch into the space. When the pen comes I’m nice and relaxed – I practice them all the time so I was ready for it.

“I said last week, get into them areas and hopefully one drops, so I got in today and Sam had some assist, to be fair! It comes off his leg, but I’m in there and I find the back of the net.

“I think it gives everybody a lift, just breaking that rut and getting the goals, getting everybody going again. As I said before, getting a point in the right direction and we’ll look to build on that in the next two games.”

The Diamonds have an early chance to do that with Tuesday’s visit of second-placed Livingston, who moved closer to league leaders Falkirk with a convincing win over Partick Thistle on Friday night.

There was a late sickener for Airdrie when the sides met at the Home of the Set Fare Arena in September, Andrew Shinnie’s stoppage-time stunner sealing the points for Livi after Aaron Reid had quickly cancelled out Stephen Kelly’s opener.

Ben missed that match after sustaining a broken hand, and he’s looking forward to pitting his wits against the side relegated from the Premiership last summer.

“I said it last week, the games can’t come quick enough for us. We’ll all be looking forward to Tuesday night and the following Saturday as well. We’ll just look to kick on now.

“It’s a team I haven’t played against before, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Diamonds boss Rhys McCabe, also speaking after Saturday’s match, wants to see a similar fighting spirit from his men.

“It’ll be a tough game, I think you saw that on Friday night given the manner of their victory against Partick. I thought they thoroughly deserved it. They’re strong, they’re physical, Davie obviously has them well drilled.

“It’s a quick turnaround, so the first thing now is purely about recovery – the boys have got to make sure that their nutrition, their sleep, their niggles, all these wee things are looked after.

“We’ll go in with a gameplan. Reference back to Livingston there, if we get anything like that performance and the performance today with the chances we created, if we get a balance between the two then I certainly think it’s made for a good game.”

With the quick turnaround mentioned, the manager expects to go into Tuesday’s clash with a similar matchday squad.
