Dundee North End vs Airdrieonians

Cammy Cooper wants Airdrie to see off Dundee North End in Sunday’s Scottish Gas Men’s Scottish Cup tie – then take that winning formula back to the Championship campaign.

The Diamonds visit North End Park for the first time in an intriguing third round tie, with the SJFA Midlands League side aiming for an cup shock on their home patch.

Diamonds striker Cooper was left cooling his heels last weekend as the scheduled match against Livingston fell foul of the weather – and says it wasn’t the ideal outcome ahead of Sunday’s introduction to the national cup competition.

“I just chilled at home with the family, recovered and made sure I’m ready for this week at training.

“It is frustrating, you’re always wanting to play as a footballer – especially in the position that we’re in, we just want to get back to winning ways as soon as possible.”

Cooper was involved in the late talking point in Airdrie’s last match, a 1-0 defeat at Dunfermline Athletic, and though the 19-year-old maintains he should have been awarded a penalty at East End Park, he also accepts the side must do better.

“We’ve got to be at the best of our ability at all times, and make sure we’re doing what we can do.

“Obviously there will be some times when stuff isn’t going our way, but we’ve just got to stay strong and make sure we’re doing the basics good, and build our confidence back. I’ve no doubt we’ll be flying again soon.”

The Diamonds travel to Dundee for Sunday’s 1:00pm kick-off knowing that anything other than a win would be a huge upset, with the Dokens – co-managed by former Scotland international Kevin McNaughton and ex-Raith defender Lewis Toshney – currently plying their trade in the Midlands League, four levels below the Championship.

With the potential of a money-spinning fourth round tie at stake, Cooper knows the importance of a positive result as Airdrie look to turn their form around.

“I’m really looking forward to it. We know it’ll be a difficult game, but the cup games are always exciting, and it’s a chance for us to go and show what we can do.

“It’s a big game for them, playing against a Championship side, so they’ll be up for it – but we’re just as motivated. The most important thing for us it to go out and get back to winning ways, so that’s what we’re focused on doing.”

And with thirteen first-team appearances already under his belt in his first season at the Albert Bartlett Stadium, Cammy will be hoping to be involved as he looks to break his Diamonds duck.

“I’m really enjoying it – it’s my first season in men’s football and I’m getting plenty of opportunities, which is good for me personally.

“Obviously as a team you want to win games, but individually it’s been good for me and I’m enjoying it.”

Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe says there’s no room for complacency as Airdrie face up to a potentially difficult challenge.

“We’re under no illusion that it’s their cup final – we’re going away to their ground, and pitch conditions and that kind of thing will play a factor, but we’ve got to make sure that we have no excuses.

“We approach the game with the right mindset, we show our level of professionalism, but in that same sense we’ve got to go there and make sure we’re very ruthless.

“We go up there with the mentality that it’s a cup final, and we go and get the job done.”

The manager was pleased to report an improvement in the squad's injury situation, with defender Mason Hancock returning to full training along with positive progress around a number of ongoing niggles.

Referee Duncan Nicolson is the man in the middle for Sunday’s North End Park clash.

Supporters are reminded that Sunday’s match is all-ticket and there will be no cash gate on the day. The remainder of the away allocation will be on sale at the Albert Bartlett Stadium tomorrow (Saturday, November 30) between 11:00am and 1:00pm.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide a livestream from the match, but we hope to publish full match highlights as early as possible.
