Aberdeen vs Airdrieonians
Aidan Wilson says Airdrie won’t compromise on their philosophy as they face Premiership side Aberdeen in Tuesday night’s Premier Sports Cup showdown.
The Diamonds have rattled in 12 goals in their two opening ties in Group A, with a thrilling finale on Saturday seeing the side come from 3-1 down to win the match 4-3.
Speaking after the win at the Marbill Coaches Stadium, Wilson is looking for improvement ahead of the upcoming fixture at Pittodrie.
“I think the levels need to go up, especially with Aberdeen coming on Tuesday. Going up there we know we need to be better.
“The boys showed good character to get back into the game, and then scored a late winner which is always nice!”
Rhys Armstrong, Terrell Agyemang and Ben Wilson were Airdrie’s late scorers at The Rock, turning the match around after James Hilton’s double had put Dumbarton in a commanding position. Prior to the exciting second 45, Finlay Gray and Lewis McGrattan had exchanged first-half goals.
Although delighted with a 100% record in the competition so far, vice-captain Wilson was unhappy with Saturday’s defensive display.
“Obviously we got a clean sheet against East Kilbride, but conceding three goals today is just not what we’re after.
“The penalty is the penalty, but with the other two we’ll be disappointed. The first one is a good finish from the boy, and then the second is a ball to the back post and a scramble from there.
“We’re disappointed to concede three goals, but again we showed good character to get back in the game.”
Aberdeen have also won both of their opening fixtures as they begin a new era under Swedish boss Jimmy Thelin, and with Airdrie leading the group on goal difference, an intriguing match-up lies ahead.
Aidan insists that Airdrie will try to implement their usual free-flowing style in the Granite City.
“We’re really looking forward to it. We know it’ll be a definite step-up from the two games previously, but it’s one we’re looking forward to – and hopefully we’ll get a positive result!
“The gaffer’s made it clear that we’ll change for no-one, whether we’re playing Aberdeen, East Kilbride, Dumbarton – we keep the same principles.
“We’re going up there to play the same brand of football and try to get a result.”
Diamonds boss Rhys McCabe reiterated the point, with wins against Premiership sides Dundee and St Mirren in previous campaigns proving that his approach has already borne fruit in the competition.
“We’ll go up there with the same mentality – we’ll go up there to win, and we’ll go with a gameplan that we think is best equipped to do so.
“We’ve had big fixtures in the past, and I’m not going to go away from my ideas and principles. Obviously we’ll watch their games, but it’s still very early in the season so it’s hard to get a gauge of where teams are at.”
Knee-injury victim Liam McStravick continues to miss out for Airdrie, who otherwise expect to have a full squad to choose from.
Final sales of match tickets take place at the Albert Bartlett Stadium this evening between 5:00pm and 7:30pm. Supporters are reminded that there will be no away ticket sales on Tuesday, and that no cash gate will be available.
While there is no parking at Pittodrie stadium, supporters travelling by car can park adjacent to the ground. The refreshments van accepts cards and cash, and mandatory searches will be carried out upon entry.
