Max Currie was delighted to make his Diamonds debut, and the goalkeeper hopes that his performances can keep him in the side against Stenhousemuir and beyond.

The 23-year-old was Airdrie’s first signing of the summer, joining from Stranraer after five years at Stair Park.

Having already worked with Diamonds Director of Football Stuart Millar, Currie quickly caught the eye of Airdrie manager Ian Murray and goalkeeping coach Jim Low.

“I had a couple of good games against Airdrie, and when Stuart said that the club would be interested in bringing me in, I knew that’s where I wanted to go.

“I had been thinking about a move away from Stranraer anyway, so it all worked out well.”

With experienced keeper David Hutton already at the club, and youngster Reece Murdoch also joining in the summer, Currie is up for the battle to be first on the teamsheet.

“I knew there was going to be good competition with Hutts here, and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to come here - it’s always good to have more than one goalie fighting for the same place and keeping each other on our toes.

“I always say ‘train as you play’, so by working hard and doing my best in matches, I hope I can hold on to the gloves.”

After sharing goalkeeping duties with Hutton throughout pre-season, Currie was given the nod to start the club’s first competitive fixture of the season, last week’s Betfred Cup defeat to Alloa Athletic.

A first-half Alan Trouten penalty and Robert Thomson’s clincher gave the Wasps victory, but Currie was pleased to make his bow.

“It was great to get the first game under my belt, although it was obviously strange playing in an empty stadium and for the first time in seven months.

“I know it was a defeat, but on a personal level it was good to make my debut and we know the team will improve as the season goes on.”

With another round of Betfred fixtures scheduled before the League One kick-off, the Diamonds travel to Ochilview to take on Stenhousemuir on Tuesday evening.

Max is hopeful of taking three points from the tie.

“I expect to win every game, no matter the opposition. Even against Alloa, knowing they’re a good side from a higher league, I went into the game expecting to win.

“Stenhousemuir might not be at the same level, but they’ll still be a tough opponent and we’ll have to perform well - but I expect us to do that and I expect us to get the win.”

Manager Ian Murray agrees that it won’t be easy against Davie Irons’ men.

“We found Stenhousemuir very difficult to play against two years ago, and we expect it to be the same this time.

“They’ll be well set up, but it’s a game we have to win if we want to push toward getting into the next round.

“It’s also our last game before the league starts, so it’s a very important one for us.”

Ally Roy (wrist) is Airdrie’s only absentee ahead of the match.
