Rainbow Laces 2019

November 29, 2019

As you may have noticed on our social media channels this week, Airdrieonians are once again proud to support Stonewall Scotland’s Rainbow Laces campaign.

We’ve been sharing messages and statistics surrounding LGBT people and sport, and this weekend the team will wear their rainbow laces and captain’s armband as we welcome East Fife to the Penny Cars Stadium for our League One match.

As a club we have always been supportive of this initiative, long before it was taken on board by the SFA and SPFL - several years ago we had to contact Stonewall to get a second supply of laces  as our Youth Academy also wanted to participate.

Gender based bigotry seems to be the last barrier to be tackled in football, however times seem to be changing and we have had a few sports personalities who have felt able come out.  It seems more acceptable overseas but hopefully this will also change here soon.

Your skill, fitness and diligence should be the only criteria you are judged on in terms of football. Let’s all embrace equality and inclusivity in our sport.

You can read more about Stonewall Scotland on their website.
