Defender Josh Edwards has moved to Dunfermline Athletic for an undisclosed fee, with Pars striker Callum Smith joining Airdrie on a season-long loan deal.

Edwards burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old, becoming an important part of the Diamonds first-team squad and earning a contract extension with some mature performances at left-back and in midfield.

Josh, who made 39 first-team appearances for the club, has long been admired by visiting scouts. When the opportunity to move to the Championship with Dunfermline arose, the player decided the time was right to move on.

Josh leaves Airdrie with our thanks and best wishes for the future.

Moving in the other direction is 19-year-old striker Callum Smith.

The Pars hitman joins the Diamonds on a season-long loan deal having made 20 first-team appearances for the Pars and spent time on loan at Alloa Athletic and Arbroath.

Manager Ian Murray told airdriefc.com: “We wish Josh all the best, this is a good opportunity for him and we’ll watch his progress with interest.

“It’s good to see young players move up a level, and it’s good for the club to produce young hungry players, so a lot of credit must go to all the coaches at academy and reserve levels over Josh’s time with us.

“Callum Smith is a player we watched five or six times last season. He’s a quick striker who can play on the shoulder and link play.

“He showed huge desire to come here, which was crucial. I think he’ll complement the group well and add more goals to the side, and I look forward to working with him.”
