Experienced defender Eckersley joins the Diamonds

May 30, 2019

We are delighted to announce that English full-back Adam Eckersley has agreed a contract to join the Diamonds for the upcoming season.

33-year-old Mancunian Adam was most recently with St Mirren, spending time on loan at Forfar Athletic in the second half of last season.

A career which began with four years at Manchester United has seen the left-back sample continental football with spells at Royal Antwerp, Brøndby, Horsens and AGF Aarhus before coming to Scotland with Heart of Midlothian in 2014.

A year at Canadian side FC Edmonton followed before Adam returned to Scotland with St Mirren.

Having spent the second half of last season at Station Park, Adam was widely expected to return to Forfar on a permanent basis, but a change in circumstances saw him released from the obligation, allowing Diamonds boss Ian Murray to make a move for the well-travelled defender.

Signing a pre-contract at the Penny Cars Stadium yesterday, Adam told airdriefc.com: “I’m pleased to finally be joining Airdrie - I’d actually tried to come here in January, but circumstances meant that the deal couldn’t happen and that’s when the interest came from Forfar.

“My situation now means that I couldn’t commit to Thursday night training up there, and the Forfar manager and directors were very understanding - and that allowed me to come to Airdrie which is only 20 minutes down the road for me.

“Hopefully I can bring a lot to the squad. I’ve played with a lot of different clubs in a lot of different countries, so I’ve got plenty of experience.

“I’m still very fit, I love bombing up and down, creating goals and scoring goals myself.

“As for my aims during my time at Airdrie - the league title is the big one, but if not that then definitely promotion through the play-offs.”

Delighted manager Ian Murray added: “Adam is a vastly experienced player who showed his class on loan at Forfar last season.

“As soon as he became available, it was something we had to move quickly on.

“Adam will bring good quality to the left hand side and is an excellent addition to our squad.”

We would like to thank our friends at Forfar Athletic for their understanding of Adam’s situation, which allowed his move to Airdrieonians to proceed.
