Airdrieonians FC this morning launches the search for our Greatest Ever XI - as voted by YOU the fans.

We’re ready to spark a thousand pub arguments and a string of Diamonds’ family fallouts as we begin the debate that will end with us unveiling the Greatest Ever XI at the end of the season.

​

Starting this Saturday on the Club website you will have the chance to pick one of four options selected by our expert panel. Simply click on the player of your choice and the search to find the Diamonds’ Dream Team is underway.

​

Each week there will be a different position to ponder and the team will gradually be constructed as the season progresses.

​

Honorary president Ian McMillan heads a five-man panel that includes four men with the history of the Diamonds running through their veins.

​

John Henderson, John O’Brien and Jim Milton are joined by our Supporters’ Trust representative Stephen Eaton.

​

Chief Executive Iain King said: “The seed of the idea for the Greatest Ever XI came when the chairman Tom Wotherspoon and I made the trip up to the Forfar game on the supporters’ bus.

​

“There was a brilliant debate going on about where Owen Coyle ranked against Stevie Cooper in the ranks of great Airdrie strikers.

​

“So we thought it would be great to multiply that argument by 11 and really get the fans falling out with each other!

​

“Seriously, this is our way of marking the history of our Club by having the fans pick the Greatest Ever XI and it should be great fun.”

Here’s how it will work:

THE STRUCTURE
From week beginning Saturday January 30 each week on the website and in the newsletter we will give the fans four options form each position in a 1-4-4-2 formation. We will begin this weekend with The Goalkeeper.

THE PANEL
Our five Diamonds’ experts, headed by Honorary President Ian McMillan, will give their recommendations for each position to Airdrieonians website editor Stuart Mathie each week and we will put a case for each player.

THE VOTING
Fans vote through the button activated method on the website and each week  on the Saturday morning there will be THE REVEAL - on Saturday February 6 we will know who you have picked as Airdrieonians’ Greatest Ever keeper!

THE CELEBRATION
At the end of the season we will unveil Airdrieonians’ Greatest Ever XI and we plan to honour the team at a special event.
