Sports Science Internship Programme

24th October 2015

Airdrieonians FC are today delighted to announce the next step in our development, a dedicated Sports Science programme that will help develop EVERY player who wears a Diamonds shirt.

The new Sports Science Internship Programme run by respected expert Robert Kielty will launch this week and heralds a new era in the professionalism of educating and bettering the footballers at our Club.

Robert, former head of Sports Science and Medicine at Blackpool FC, currently lectures at Glasgow Caledonian University and oversees a similar programme to the one being brought at Airdrieonians at the Fife Elite Academy.

And he explained: “When you look to bring in a programme like this at a football club you need forward-thinking people who see the benefits for the footballers under their care.

“We have that at Airdrieonians and I am really excited about the way forward.

“Our job is to maximise the potential of the players and let them see the benefits to their game that our methods can bring.”

The Internship Programme means that over the next few months every team in the Academy will have a graduate under Robert’s guidance to work with them.

And Robert himself will oversee a programme of fitness testing that will give each Diamonds player the chance to see where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

Diamonds’ Director of Coaching Eddie Wolecki Black is an expert in periodisation which helps to specifically tailor training schedules to the needs of the modern game.

And he said: “Robert’s appointment is a vital part of our vision for the way forward where we produced dedicated, committed footballers.

“He will start his work right away this week and begin to bring in the interns to help every team from the Under-13s upwards.

“It’s another huge step forward for the Club in terms of getting the right structure in place for the future.”
