Airdrieonians v Forfar Athletic preview

3rd October 2014

Marc Fitzpatrick believes that home wins over Forfar and Brechin can be the spark the Diamonds need for a charge up the league table.

The midfielder also says that last week's last-gasp win over Ayr United was well deserved after recent improved performances.

"It was great to get our first win last weekend.

"I think it was a result our performances have deserved. It was also very enjoyable to go away to the league leaders and pick up the win".

Having knocked the table-toppers off their perch, Airdrie now face the side who have replaced them at the summit, Dick Campbell's Forfar Athletic.

Fitzpatrick feels that maximum points are achievable as the Diamonds go into a home double-header against the Angus sides, but is relieved that a confidence-boosting win has finally come.

"I think we always believed we were better than our results, but it gets increasingly hard to keep the confidence up when we weren't winning games.

"Hopefully that win will help us kick on and start climbing the table.

"These next two home games are big games for us, if we can pick up two wins we will catapult up the league.

"Although it will be very tough against two good sides, it's something I think we can achieve".

Ex-Morton and Ross County man Fitzpatrick has been ever-present for Gary Bollan's side this season, operating in midfield and the centre of defence.

While happy to play wherever selected, Marc says he is relishing the versatility of his midfield role.

"I enjoy that you're always involved in the game whilst playing centre-mid, and you have the option to attack and defend - whereas at the back you need to be a little more conservative".

A conservative defence will be required against a Forfar side who have notched up 12 league goals so far this season - although the Station Park men are still seeking their first win on the road.

With Airdrie having finally found their shooting boots and got a first victory under their belt, a home win is the next target.

Referee John McKendrick is in charge of the top vs bottom fixure.
