Boyle and Blockley celebrate Cup win
30th July 2013
Jimmy Boyle was delighted with Airdrieonians' winning start to the season.
The Diamonds progressed to the second round of the Ramsdens Challenge Cup after beating Hamilton Accies 2-1.
Louis Longridge opened the scoring for Accies at New Broomfield but Willie McLaren equalised before Nathan Blockley headed home to clinch victory.
Boyle said: "I thought we defended very well and worked very hard. We created some good chances and I felt we totally deserved the win.
"I don't think the performance will be the best we will produce this season but the important thing was that we won the game.
"Our shape in the middle of the park was good and we have boys through the spine of the team who are winners."
Meanwhile, midfielder Blockley was thrilled to get on the scoresheet in Airdrie's first match as 'Onians since May 2002.
The 21-year-old said: "This was a huge game for the supporters so we had to go out and try and win.
"It's special for us and special for the players as the Airdrieonians name has just come back which is great for the club.
"As for my goal? It's in the locker but I don't find them very often! I knew where the ball was going and I managed to get on the end of it."
