Jim Lister interview

26th August 2013

Jim welcome to Airdrie, we know from experience you came from Dumbarton but fill us in regarding your football career
Quite a few. Tulliallan, Oakley, Camelon, Bathgate, Berwick Rangers, Alloa Athletic, Brechin City and Dumbarton.

And who were the managers, any of them stick out that you may copy their style if you went into coaching, management?
I am trying to count them all. But probably 11 in total.  Ian Murray knew the right time to speak to players. Picking any manager I feel that Mourinho has got great player management skills and that is a real strength.

How would you compare the junior v senior games, especially when cup competitions see the junior clubs enter earlier rounds?
The standards are a lot better at senior level. Players look after themselves a lot better the coaching and the training also makes you a better player and say over a 6 month period you would see the difference in any player. But there are still a number of players at junior level who could make that step up.

How do you describe yourself as player and what you bring to your team?
A player with passion and desire, willing to bring players on through my personality and I feel I am a team player and I think that is a good quality to have.

So how did the signing for Airdrieonians come about?
I got a phone call from Jimmy Boyle who asked me if I was interested in signing and I said I would sign. I know I have moved down league but sometimes it’s not just having but also about enjoyment. I enjoyed my time at Dumbarton and wish them all the best. This is a new time though and I am an Airdrieonians player now.

Yet you left Dumbarton, in a higher league, and after winning so many player of the year awards?
Yes, that is true but it was the right time, as I said I enjoyed my time at Dumbarton and I did win those awards, they are on my mantelpiece. The time was right to move

There seems to be a partnership developing between you and Lewis Coult?
I would say so but I wasn’t sure at the start, but now we are reading each other’s game well and that will be good for team hopefully. He is a good lad and a good lad and a lot stronger than I had thought.

And after setting up quite a few it was good to get off the mark, what happened for your goal?
It was typical Jimmy Lister goal where I climbed in the air and fired a bullet header into the net. It was a really good cross from Lewis but in the back of my mind I was expecting a Marvin Andrews challenge to come in but it was good to get off the mark.

So do you have any personal aims or targets for this season?
Yes I have a couple. I want to score against Dunfermline and Rangers. I used to go to school in Dunfermline, that’s why I want to score against them. I live in Falkirk and wanted to score against them. When I was young I wanted to play against Celtic and Rangers and score against them and we will be playing Rangers 4 times this season.

And what goals should the team have this season?
We need to be targeting a top end of the table finish and after the way we have started this season we look good going forward, 9 goals in three games is decent. And against good sides too.
