Boss Jimmy Boyle has welcomed the return of the famous Airdrieonians name.

The Club confirmed last week that it had changed its name from United to 'Onians on June 1 this month.

Boyle was a member of the Airdrieonians team that played in the 1992 and 1995 Scottish Cup finals and part of the side that faced Sparta Prague in the European Cup Winners' Cup.

And he's delighted to see the revival of a title which means so much to the fans and the town.

"It's fantastic news," he said. "I think Airdrie United was great as it brought the club back but, in everybody's eyes, we always will be Airdrieonians. I'm glad it's back.

"Airdrieonians was a unique club and missing the name has been a massive thing for the town.

"We've got the name back and hopefully people will start seeing the club as it used to be.

"I'm really looking forward to next season. The Second Division is going to be a good league and we're going into it as Airdrieonians."
