Airdrieonians v Stenhousemuir preview

2nd August 2013

Airdrie are looking to achieve back-to-back victories for the first time in almost a year.

The 'Onians face Stenhousemuir in the first round of the League Cup on Saturday after kicking off the campaign with a 2-1 win over Hamilton Accies in the Ramsdens Challenge Cup.

Manager Jimmy Boyle and his players know the Warriors, who boast a talented squad packed with experience, will prove a tough nut to crack at New Broomfield.

But striker Lewis Coult, who signed for Airdrie from Cowdenbeath earlier this summer, feels the team can build on their Accies success.

The 25-year-old said: "We were up against a good side in Hamilton, where I actually started my career, but I thought we rose to the occasion.

"It was important to get the win, not just for the fans, but for ourselves as well. We're delighted to be in the next round of the cup.

"The gaffer has worked very hard with us over pre-season and you could see that in our performance.

"We have good players here, some of whom could maybe still play at a higher level. We're not here to make up the numbers; we want to do as well as we can."

Airdrie are playing as 'Onians for the first time in more than 11 years and Coult says the players are more than aware of the importance of the name change.

"We know about the Airdrieonians name coming back this season," he added. "There is a lot of history behind that and I felt we had a bit of spirit about us."

As for the team news, veteran midfielder Martin Hardie has shaken off a slight ankle knock and is in contention for a place in the starting line-up.

Centre-back Gregor Buchanan may miss out due to a knee injury. Vice-captain John Boyle is unavailable because of knee ligament damage.
