John Reid

January 7, 2019

We were saddened to hear that former Airdrieonians player John Reid passed away recently.

John was born in Edinburgh in 1935, and joined the Diamonds from Tranent Juniors in August 1954.

He was a standout at outside-right in the Airdrie side which romped to the ‘B’ Division title and reached the semi-finals of both the Scottish Cup and the League Cup in season 54/55. In the Scottish Cup semi against Celtic, in front of a crowd of 89,000, John scored with 12 seconds on the clock as the Diamonds earned a 2-2 draw.

John made a total of 62 appearances in an Airdrie shirt, scoring 21 goals.

John’s funeral takes place at 12:30pm on Friday, January 11 at Holytown Crematorium. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
