Development League West
Our Under 20s defeated Stranraer Under 20s 2-0 at Ravenscraig in our opening league game of the season thanks to goals from Cameron Russell and Calvin Cowie.
For the game the new management team of Stevie Findlay, James Grant and John Boyle took charge for the first time and they fielded a starting eleven which included a number of young players who have had first team game time this season including Cameron Russell, Dean Cairns and Scott Thomson whilst Stranraer included over aged goalkeeper Max Currie in the starting eleven.
Despite both teams having a lot of possession neither of them were able to carve out any chances until the 28th minute when Stranraer won a free kick about 30 yards from goal as from it Kieran McLaughlin hit a shot but the ball went high and wide and then on the 41st minute Stranraer had another chance when Jai Holland beat two men and hit a shot from inside the box but the ball went just wide.
Our Young Diamonds responded by winning a penalty for a foul on Robbie Leighton on the 44th minute and from it Cameron Russell stepped up confidently and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net to give Max Currie no chance and send Airdrie into half time winning 1-0.
Our Under 20s started the half brightly and two minutes after the restart Cameron Russell had the opening chance of it when he hit a shot on the half volley from inside the box but the ball went over the bar and then on the 60th minute Stranraer's John Mitchell picked up a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Airdrie's Scott Thomson and we made our first substitution as Jordan Duncan came on for Conor McLaughlin who had picked up a knock earlier in the game.
Our Young Diamonds had the games next chance on the 66th minute when Scott Thomson hit a shot from inside the box but Max Currie made the save and five minutes later Cameron Russell had a chance when he hit a shot from the top of the box but the ball went harmlessly over the bar and we made our second substitution as Ewan McGuinness came on for Robbie Leighton who had also picked up a knock earlier in the game. Stranraer then responded with their first chance of the half on the 73rd minute when they drilled a shot goal wards from the top of the box but Airdrie goalkeeper Matthew Kerr got down low and made the save and a minute later he was called into action again and he terrifically flew through the air to get a strong hand on the ball and turn it over the bar from a shot about 20 yards out and from the resulting corner no danger was caused.
Our Under 20s went in search of a second goal and on the 77th minute had a chance when Ewan McGuinness laid the ball back to Calvin Cowie who was about 25 yards from goal and Calvin expertly curled a shot by Max Currie and into the bottom corner of the net to give him no chance and make it 2-0. Stranraer responded by making all three substitutions on the 82nd minute as Dean Picken, David Gray and Lewis Crawford came on for Chris McGowan, John Mitchell and Ewan Farrell however it was Airdrie who had the next chance when Ewan McGuinness hit a shot on the volley from about 20 yards out but Max Currie made a brilliant save to deny us a third goal. There was still time for our young diamonds to make a final substitution as Trialist Jamie Hall came on for Cameron Russell and he almost had an instant impact as he strongly held off a defender and hit a shot from inside the box but the ball rattled the post and went wide and we won the game 2-0.
