Stirling Albion vs Airdrieonians preview

31st July 2015

Liam Watt wants to make up for the cup disappointment at Annan, and says a win over Stirling Albion will set the Diamonds up for the league campaign.

The midfielder was part of the team that crashed out of the Petrofac Training Cup in the first round, as Annan Athletic turned round a one goal deficit to win 3-1.

Watt admits he and his team-mates were posted missing in the second half.

"We just didn't come out in the second half. We started well and looked comfortable, but in the second half we didn't do anything we had been doing in the first.

"They looked sharper and were getting on to a lot of second balls, and we really couldn't get out our half."

So as Annan progress to round 2, Airdrie must dust themselves down and prepare for a Scottish League Cup visit to Stirling Albion.

Watt is in no doubt about what is required ahead of the trip to Forthbank.

"Of course a good result is important. No matter who we play, we want to win. If we win on Saturday it puts us in a good position ahead of the league.

"We have a really strong team again and we are all training well, so there's no reason why we can't go there and win."

With the league opener in a week's time, Liam knows his priorities and has faith in his team.

"We want to finish as high up the league as possible and push for promotion. We have the team to do it and we believe we can.

"It will be hard as it's another strong league, but there's no reason why we can't."

Diamonds gaffer Gary Bollan has stated that places are up for grabs following the Annan defeat, and changes may be made for the trip to Stirling.

The Binos, who were relegated from League One last season, also faced defeat in their campaign opener, losing 3-2 to Elgin City in the Petrofac Cup.

Both sides will be looking to bounce back and take a positive result into their league campaigns.
