Airdrieonians vs Brechin City preview

27th November 2015

Airdrie welcome Brechin City to New Broomfield for Saturday's Scottish Cup third round tie, and Jordan Morton warns that league positions count for nothing.

City have struggled for form in League One this season and currently languish at the bottom of the table, but midfielder Morton says Airdrie's own performances need to improve.

With the Diamonds coming off back to back defeats from the top two, Dunfermline Athletic and Ayr United, does the former Livingston winger see the cup as a welcome break?

"No, I wouldn't say so. Some of our league results have been disappointing.

"Some of the games we have played reasonably well, but in others we've just not been good enough."

With a nine point advantage over their opponents in the league and having already beaten the Angus side home and away, Airdrie are odds-on favourites with the bookies to progress to the next round.

But Morton is aware that form can be irrelevant when it comes to knockout competition.

"There's no such thing as a straightforward win for any team in this league.

"It will be a hard game - no doubt they will be up for it because of the previous results.

"Anything can happen in the cup."

With Ayr and Dunfermline beginning to pull away at the top of the table, the Diamonds remain focussed on their stated aim - a top four finish.

Could a run in the cup be a distraction from that? Not according to Jordan.

"A cup run would be good, but our main priority is to do well in the league and get as far up the table as possible and stay there."

Marc Fitzpatrick is still rated as a doubt for Airdrie after missing the Ayr United defeat with a back strain.

Dene Shields is sidelined for City.

Euan Anderson referees the William Hill Scottish Cup tie.

Prices for tomorrow's tie have been reduced to just £10 for adults and £5 for kids.
