Lennon appointed Acting Head Coach

10th March 2016

Airdrieonians FC has tonight announced that Danny Lennon will take over as Acting Head Coach until the end of this season.

Diamonds’ Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black suffered a stroke at half-time during Saturday’s 1-3 League One win at Cowdenbeath and the Club has been coming to terms with that and making sure Eddie’s wife Emma and the family have all they need as he begins the fight back.

The Club felt an experienced figure was needed to guide us through the last eight games as we aim for the play-offs and we are happy that St Mirren’s League Cup-winning manager Danny, a close friend of the gaffer’s, has decided to come on board.

Danny will be at the Club tonight to oversee training ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Brechin City.

He will work alongside first team coach Donald Jennow, Under-20s head coach Kevin McBride and goalkeeping coach Lindsay Hamilton to guide us through until the end of the campaign as Eddie recuperates.

And Danny said: “No-one would want to come in to a job in these circumstances but all I want to do is try to continue the terrific work Eddie has done at Airdrieonians until he recovers.

“Eddie is a close friend of mine and we share the same football philosophy.

It was very important to me that I had his blessing to come in and I know I have that now.”

Chief Executive Iain King believes Danny’s appointment was needed in the wake of the shock illness that befell Eddie after he had guided the Diamonds to their most successful quarter of the season.

And he said: “Donald Jennow and Kevin McBride have been magnificent since Eddie fell ill and they have worked in the most trying of circumstances.

“Donald guided the team through that second-half at Cowdenbeath to a great win and their preparation of the side for Tuesday night’s draw with Forfar was also excellent.

“With eight games remaining as Eddie recovers, though, we felt a more experienced figure would help our coaching staff in the gaffer’s absence.

“Danny is someone Eddie has the utmost regard for and he knows the Club are in good hands for the remainder of the season until he returns.”
