Stranraer v Airdrieonians preview

21st November 2014

Scott Stewart aims to follow in dad Sandy's footsteps with the Diamonds - and says the path can start with promotion this season and a win over Stranraer on Saturday.

The 18-year-old midfielder is the son of Airdrie legend Sandy Stewart, who tasted Premier League, Cup Final and European action in the Diamond jersey, and Scott is determined to mirror those achievements.

"My dad played at a high level with Airdrie, and that's my aim.

"We always knew that promotion would be difficult with two full-time teams, but the opportunity is still there.

"As results show every week, if you show a bit of consistency then you'll be up there - and that is our aim".

Consistency has certainly been an issue for the Diamonds this season, a decent unbeaten run being ended last week by back-to-back defeats at the hands of Morton.

Stewart thinks that injury and availability problems played their part as much as poor performances.

"We had to change our central defence due to injury and international call-ups. Before that we had two clean sheets".

Further changes will have to be made as the Diamonds travel to Stranraer, with Ben Richards-Everton facing a one-match suspension after crossing the disciplinary points threshold.

More positive news for Airdrie is the return of Luca Gasparotto, who was on international duty with Canada, and Jim Lister who missed last Saturday's match through illness.

As Gary Bollan's depleted squad slowly returns to full-strength, Stewart believes that they are capable of better - starting with a win at Stair Park.

"We were unfortunate to only get a draw when we played them at home earlier in the season, and I feel with the squad that we have we are capable of going down there and getting a good result".

Signs of a never-say-die attitude reminiscent of Airdrie teams from bygone days - and a certain Sandy Stewart...
