Ayr United v Airdrieonians preview

10th March 2015

Ross Docherty says the play-off race is far from over, but only a win will do at Ayr.

Airdrie travel to Somerset Park for tonight's rearranged fixture following Saturday's 0-0 draw at Brechin, and 'Doc' claims it was a decent result in the circumstances.

"The conditions weren't great, but that's the same for both teams.

"We weren't nearly as good as we have been recently, but it was very pleasing to see us getting a point even when we played poorly."

With Brechin on a lengthy unbeaten run, a difficult match was to be expected, but have the dropped points dented the Diamonds play-off hopes? Not according to Docherty.

"It's certainly not over. Results kind of went against us at the weekend, but there are still 9 games to play and plenty of points to be picked up.

"I still don't believe that there is a team in the league who are much better than us."

While ex-Livi ace Ross feels that Saturday's draw wasn't the worst result possible, the stoppage-time red card shown to joint-top scorer Jim Lister was a definite blow.

"Jimmy will be missed because on his day in this league he's unplayable.

"But we have plenty of cover and one or two lads can step up into the team and do very well.

"The other boys have been doing very well in training and reserve games so I'm not worried too much."

Suspension to an in-form striker could be a cause for worry in the Airdrie camp, as could an upturn in form for tonight's opponents Ayr United.

Results - and performances - have steadily improved since former Diamonds boss Ian McCall took the hotseat, but Ross feels that Airdrie's own performances give them every reason to be confident.

"Ayr have done very well recently and it will be a very tough game - but we've also been in great form!

"Of course we go there trying to win the game, as that's the only way we will get into the play-offs, by winning as many of our remaining games as possible."

Colin Steven referees the match, rearranged after a frozen pitch caused the original tie to be postponed a month ago.
