Airdrieonians v Stranraer preview

24th January 2014

Northern Irish winger Caolan McAleer wants to help Airdrieonians to back-to-back league victories for the first time this season.

The 20-year-old, who is on loan from Premiership outfit Partick Thistle, netted a stunner in last Saturday's 1-0 win over Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park.

The Diamonds will climb off the bottom of League One this weekend if a win at home to Stranraer is coupled with an Arbroath defeat at champions-elect Rangers.

And McAleer is keen to bring that possibility to reality after scouring for footage of his strike in Fife to send back home to his family across the Irish Sea.

"This was a massive win for us," he said. "We needed the three points and we showed good character to get them.

"Hopefully the goal is on Twitter and Facebook as it is the best I've ever and probably will ever score!

"I'll have to tell my dad how good the goal was as he'll probably just think it was a tap-in!

"I'd like to get a few more goals instead of assists as you get noticed a bit more. People look at who scores not who sets them up."

McAleer's loan agreement is due to expire at the end of this month but the Diamonds may request that he stays at New Broomfield for a bit longer.

The player has been a regular fixture in boss Gary Bollan's starting line-up and impressed the Airdrieonians faithful with his work rate and ability.

"We'll just see what happens," he added. "At the moment all I'm concentrating on is playing well.

"I want to play games. I don't want to be sitting on the bench."

Airdrieonians could include new signing Chris McCluskey in the matchday squad for the visit of the Blues. The 26-year-old keeper has signed to the end of the season after the club received international clearance.

Chris O'Neil, Grant Evans and Grant Drummond remain on the injured list. Striker Lewis Coult missed the match at Dunfermline having spent the week battling flu.
