AYR UNITED 1:0 AIRDRIE
9th September 2012

Despite creating a number of chances our Under 19s suffered their first loss of the season after losing 1-0 against Ayr United Under 19s at Prestwick Academy in the fourth league game of the season.

For the game our Under 19s manager Stevie Findlay named an unchanged starting eleven and substitute’s bench from the side that won 4-1 against Forfar Athletic Under 19s a week ago.

Our Young Diamonds had the first chance of the game after only four minutes of it as Tyler McGuigan hit a shot from inside the box but Ayr goalkeeper Andrew Clark parried the ball away and his defence cleared the danger. Ayr had to wait a further four minutes for there first chance when they won a free kick as from it the ball was crossed into the box and after it wasn’t cleared properly it ended up with Andrew Muir sending a shot goalwards but our Under 19s goalkeeper Jonny Grier got down low to make the save.

The next chance in the game didn’t come until the 23rd minute and it was for Airdrie when Tam Robertson hit a shot from about 20 yards out but the ball went high and wide and two minutes later our Young Diamonds picked up there first yellow card of the game as Kyle Nicoll was yellow carded for a tackle. With only ten minutes of the half remaining our Under 19s had another chance when Tyler McGuigan hit a shot from about 25 yards out but the ball went high and wide and on the 41st minute Airdrie picked up there second yellow card as Tam Robertson was booked for persistent fouling however there was to be no more chances and the teams headed into half time drawing 0-0.

Our Young Diamonds went in search of the first goal and on the 48th minute Andrew Gilchrist had the first chance of the half when he hit a curling shot from inside the box but the ball went just wide and six minutes later Jamie Barclay had a chance when he hit a shot from about 20 yards out but the ball went wide. Ayr responded to our Under 19s early pressure with there first chance of the half on the 57th minute when they broke Airdrie’s offside trap and with only Jonny Grier to beat Dillon Dunn excellently placed a shot by him and into the bottom corner of the net to give Ayr a 1-0 lead and before the next chance our Young Diamonds made there first substitution two minutes later as Alan Cairns came on for Andrew Gilchrist.

Our Under 19s went in search of a goal to get back into the game and on the 62nd minute had a chance when they won a free kick about 20 yards from goal as from it Andrew Gilchrist hit a curling shot but the ball went over the bar and two minutes later he had another chance when he hit a shot from inside the box but again the ball went over the bar. Airdrie continued to create chances and on the 66th minute Alan Cairns had one when he drove forward and hit a shot from about 20 yards out but Andrew Clark got down low and made the save and a minute later Andrew Gilchrist had a chance when he got onto the end of a Christian McKenna cutback with a shot from inside the box but this time Andrew Clark made the save with his feet and his defence cleared the ball away.

Our Under 19s continued to create chances and on the 70th minute Christian McKenna had the next one when he hit a shot from inside the box but the ball went wide and two minutes later they made there second substitution as Lee Brown came on for Kyle Nicoll and on the 76th minute he was involved as he hit a shot from about 20 yards out but the ball went wide. Shortly after this Lee Brown had an excellent chance when he nipped through on goal and with only Andrew Clark to beat he hit a shot but the ball went just wide and then on the 80th minute Airdrie were reduced to ten men after Tam Robertson was sent off after he picked up a second yellow card for a tackle.

Ayr looked to take advantage of there extra man and on the 81st minute had only there second chance of the half when they broke through on goal and with only Jonny Grier to beat they hit a shot but Jonny had managed to make himself big and close the angle down and he managed to parry the ball away but the rebound fell to Ayr substitute Shaun Robertson and he hit a shot however Jonny Grier managed to get back on his line and brilliantly parried the ball away and his defence cleared the danger to keep our Young Diamonds in the game. Shortly after this Ayr had another chance when they hit a shot from the top of the box but Jonny Grier made another save and on the 84th minute Airdrie made there final substitution as Steven McGinty came on for an injured Ryan McSherry.

Despite having one less player our Under 19s went onto finish the game strongly and on the 85th minute had a chance when they won a corner as from it the ball was crossed into the box and Jordan Wright got onto the end of it with a header which had Andrew Clark beaten however an Ayr defender was on the line and he managed to head the ball away and a minute later Alan Cairns had a chance when he hit a shot from distance but the ball went high and wide. Then with only one minute of the game remaining Airdrie had another chance when they won a free kick at the half way line as from it Jonny Grier launched the ball into the box and Steven McGinty flicked it onto Lee Brown and he sent a shot goalwards but the ball flew just by the post and during stoppage time our Young Diamonds had one more chance when they won a corner as from it the ball was crossed into the box and Jamie Barclay got away from his marker to send a header goalwards but the ball went wide and our Under 19s suffered there first defeat of the season.
